The basics of maintaining gum health
- Posted on: Oct 15 2020
A healthy smile starts with healthy gums. The soft gums of the mouth are critical to ensuring the smile is beautiful and free from periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is an infection that starts in the gum tissues and can spread throughout the mouth, causing gum, bone, and tooth loss. At Clear Lake Dental Care and Implant Center, we strongly encourage patients to be vigilant in achieving and maintain good oral health and wellness to not only discourage the development of periodontal disease, but to reduce the risk of tooth decay as well.
How to maintain healthy gums
While visiting the dentist every six months is a smart choice, it is not the only way in which patients maintain oral health and wellness. The key is good oral health care habits at home. Drs. Das, Pham, and Rivera of Clear Lake Dental care and Implant Center in Webster, TX encourages patients to follow these recommendations every day to keep the smile healthy:
- Brush after every meal. It is ideal for patients to brush their teeth after every meal whenever possible to maintain oral health and wellness. This removes sugars and acids that can contribute to periodontal disease and tooth decay.
- Flossing at least once a day. Food particles can become trapped between teeth and close to the gumline, allowing sugars and bacteria to form acid that can eat away at natural tooth enamel. Removing these food particles by flossing can be done after every meal, or at least once a day.
- Use a mouthwash. In addition to brushing and flossing, utilizing a mouthwash to kill bacteria that can cause periodontal disease is a smart addition to your daily protocol.
- Watch what you eat. Reduce your consumption of sugars and eat healthy foods to improve oral health—and overall health!
