The importance of preventative care to protect a healthy smile

Visiting the dentist twice a year is just one part of taking good care of the smile. There are many elements that contribute to a healthy smile, and routine visits are just the start. Preventative care should always be the focus when it comes to oral health, as many conditions that are bothersome or damaging to the smile can be avoided altogether with proper care.

Don’t avoid pain

Many conditions are present and diagnoseable even before they cause symptoms such as pain and bleeding. In fact, when patients wait for problems to occur before contacting their dentist, they may be putting themselves in a position where they require more extensive—and expensive!—dental work than if they had caught the problem earlier. The team at Clear Lake Dental Care and Implant Center encourages patients to keep their six month dental appointments as this allows our dental team to assess the smile and evaluate if problems are occurring well before they become a bigger issue. Cavities and periodontal disease can be spotted in the earliest stages and treated with a proper diagnosis.

The link between oral health and overall health

There are many studies that reveal a link between one’s oral health and overall health. The bacteria that can be harbored in the mouth and contributes to periodontal disease can also spread throughout the body through the bloodstream and increase one’s risk of developing issues including high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even Alzheimer’s disease.

Eating a nutritional diet

In addition to maintaining the smile with brushing and flossing, a diet low in sugars can also reduce the acids in the mouth that can increase the development of periodontal disease. Patients are advised to make changes to their diet including decreasing sugary drinks and increasing water consumption. When eating foods or drinking beverages high in sugars, patients should take great care in brushing and flossing their teeth afterwards.
