How to Prepare for Dental Implants
- Posted on: Apr 30 2017
Having one or two missing teeth can put more than a damper on your lifestyle— it can make you feel self-conscious as well. Luckily, with dental implants, the dentists at Clear Lake Dental Care can give you back your ability to chew and smile with one two-step surgical procedure. However, as one of the most important parts of any surgery, it’s important that you know how to prepare. From quitting smoking to getting x-rays, this article will discuss a few ways you can prepare for your dental implants. Read on to learn more.
It’s no secret that smoking is bad for your health, but did you know that smoking can also lower your body’s ability to recover after surgery? Additionally, smoking can also cause infections— especially in regards to oral surgery. As such, we encourage all of our patients to quit smoking at least two weeks before surgery.
Follow the Diet Plan
Depending on what type of sedation is going to be used during your dental implant surgery, you may have to follow a diet plan for a few days before. For instance, if general anesthesia is used, patients will need to follow a strict, clear liquid diet so that they don’t get nauseous or vomit during or after surgery.
You will be required to get at least two different sets of x-rays done on your mouth during the dental implant procedure. Your initial x-rays will be used to help our dentists determine if you’re a good candidate for implants. Then, once the rods have been implanted and have had a few months to heal, you will be asked to get another set of x-rays to see if the implant has taken. And, in some cases, our dentists will have you get a third x-ray after the crown has been placed.
