3 Things to Look For In a Toothpaste
- Posted on: May 15 2019
According to the American Dental Association, you should be brushing your teeth at least twice a day, but if you want to brush your teeth more than that, then be our guest! To make sure that you get the most out of every tooth brushing session, make sure that you look for the following things in a toothpaste.
Fluoride
Even if you have fluoride in your water supply, we also recommend that patients look for a toothpaste that has fluoride in it as well. Fluoride is a natural mineral that is used to help strengthen enamel to prevent against a host of oral problems like cavities, chips, cracks, and tooth decay. Because fluoride is so easy to use, there’s really no reason why you should be using it every day.
Whitening
One of the things that our patients talk to us about is whether or not over the counter whitening toothpastes can do anything. The short answer to this is “yes,” but they can only fight off surface level stains. We almost always encourage patients to use a whitening toothpaste because it will help you maintain your professionally whitened teeth not will help you get rid of everyday stains caused by things like coffee or even red wine.
ADA Approval
Another thing that you want to look for is toothpaste with the American Dental Associations’ stamp of approval on it. Participation in the ADA’s program is voluntary, so not every toothpaste brand gets it, but it is definitely something to look out for.
Toothpaste is the most basic thing that you use to keep your teeth clean, but you may not know what to even look for in one. The next time you go to reach for cheapest tube of toothpaste that you see in the shelves, think again and keep these things in mind.
