2 Adult Orthodontic Options that Won’t Make You Like a Pre-teen

At our Webster TX dental office, we don’t believe that you’re ever too old for great teeth. One of the troubling myths in dentistry is that people assume they are too old for certain treatment. Unfortunately, some patients believe certain aspect of their oral health are not important the older they get. It’s quite the opposite. The older you get, the more important your dental care is.

At Clear Lake Dental Care, we believe that patients deserve a beautiful smile regardless of their age. You might think that you missed the perceived “window of treatment,” but it’s time to rethink your options, especially if you have crooked or misaligned teeth.

There are millions of adults around the country who forego orthodontic treatment for several reasons. They believe themselves to be too old. They are wary of the cost. Or they don’t want to wear braces. A few days ago, we met with a patient who had struggled with tooth alignment problems for years. She was concerned about needing braces and said she didn’t want to look like “a preteen.” She had a professional job, so she wasn’t too keen on the idea of wearing metal braces for two years or longer. To our surprise, this patient had no idea about the advancements we dentists have made in orthodontic treatment.

No More Looking Like a Pre-teen

Today, we have two ways you can correct your teeth without “looking like a pre-teen.” Earlier we wrote that millions of Americans struggle with crooked teeth. Some of these people have major bite issues and malocclusions, while other simply have a few crooked teeth, crowding, or gaps between teeth. Traditional metal braces continue to be the gold standard of orthodontics, especially for those with serious alignment issues. But the thing is that most people do not need conventional orthodontics to achieve a healthier smile. There are short-term orthodontic options available.

  1. Six Month Smiles —  This short-term orthodontic system uses tooth-colored braces to guide teeth into a more appropriate position. As the name suggests, Six Months Smiles treatment takes just six weeks to complete. The treatment is so quick because we only focus on the teeth that need to be corrected. This treatment is ideal for patients who have alignment issues toward the front of the mouth. We call the teeth people see when you smile the “social 6.” Crooked teeth toward the front of the mouth can ruin a great smile. Six Month Smiles can correct those crooked teeth without discomfort. By the time you get used to having braces on the teeth, the treatment is finished. It’s extremely quick and affordable
  2. Invisalign — Many patients cannot tolerate the thought of braces. That’s fine, too, because now we have a treatment that can correct crooked teeth, gapped teeth, recessed teeth without metal braces. Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners to move the teeth into a more appropriate position in just about 12 to 18 months. With Invisalign, there are no fixed appliances. Rather, this system uses clear aligners that are virtually invisible and removable. It’s possible to complete your entire treatment without anyone ever knowing.

Invisalign was created in the late 1990s and has grown in popularity over the past two decades. It has now been used by millions of people across the United States. Because the treatment is subtle and the aligners can be removed, it’s ideal for our working professionals who deal with the public. During your Invisalign treatment, you’ll swap out aligners about once every two weeks until your teeth shift into a better position. While these aligners can be removed for easy eating and cleaning, it’s important to wear the aligners for 20 hours or longer every day. Anything less may cause less optimal results or delay treatment.

If you have crooked teeth or alignment problems, don’t assume that braces are the only answer. We have plenty of solutions for your smile at Clear Lake Dental Care. Just call our office today 281-500-9877 to schedule a consultation.
